Good evening members of the Big Blue Nation. The 2018 NBA Draft is over and I had the privilege of sitting through all sixty picks and watching four of five Cats be drafted. Sadly, the one missing is Wenyen Gabriel.
After Kentucky’s loss to Kansas State, seven Cats announced their decisions to enter the NBA draft. Kevin Knox, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Hamidou Diallo declared for the draft, hired an agent, and we waved them goodbye. Three Cats declared for the draft but didn’t hire an agent, Wenyen Gabriel, Jarred Vanderbilt, and PJ Washington. On May 30th, Wenyen and Jarred announced that they would stay in the draft while PJ announced he would return for his sophomore year. Tonight, Kevin Knox, SGA, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Hamidou Diallo were drafted and there dreams of playing in the NBA came true.
Kevin Knox: #9 to Knicks
Before the pick was announced, Knicks fans were heard chanting “Michael Porter!” for Michael Porter Jr, then Knox’s name was announced and the Barclays Center erupted in boos. When asked Knox said, “That’s good, it’s motivation. I’m ready to get to work. They booed Porzingis and look where he is now. They can chant Michael Porter all they want. They got Kevin Knox.”
Knox is a great scorer and will work well with Kristaps Porzingis. Good luck, Kevin.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: #11 to Clippers
SGA was originally drafted by the Hornets, then was traded to the Clippers. Shai decided to take the design from his grandmothers carpet and turn it into a suit. Maybe that’s why the Hornets traded him.
After trading Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, the Clippers are in a small rebuild. SGA will have to battle with Austin Rivers for minutes. Good luck Shai.
Jarred Vanderbilt: #41 to Nuggets
Jarred was originally drafted by the Magic, then traded to the Nuggets.
Vanderbilt will get to play with two former Cats in Jamal Murray and Trey Lyles. Vanderbilt is a high energy player who can rebound at a high rate but needs to improve on the offensive end. I’m just praying that he can stay injury free.
Good luck Jarred.
Hamidou Diallo: #45 to Thunder
Hami was originally drafted by the Nets, then traded to the Hornets then….wait for it…..traded to the Thunder. He will get to play with Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, and Paul George, if that trio stays together.
Diallo really struggles with shooting in a shooters league. Long, lengthy, and strong, Hami is a good defender, but needs to improve in a lot of areas.
Good luck Hami.
Wenyen Gabriel was the only Cat not drafted tonight. Being a tall and long player who can shoot the three, he will be picked up soon.
Good luck Wenyen.
NBA Draft 2018 was fun. Goodnight and go cats.
